Step One: Car. Check

Yesterday I bought my first car. It's a 2003 Hyundai Sonata. It feels really good finally having my own transportation. No car payments either. Tomorrow I have to get it insured and then I'll be safe. I'm finally starting to be on my own for real and it feels great. I graduated from college and got a car. Now all I need is a job and a place of my own. Maybe a husband too. I'll just focus on getting to the boyfriend stage first. I also made it to my 23rd birthday. I guess we can call that an accomplishment as well.

I've been enjoying the life of a college graduate. No homework. No class. Very little stress (aside from worrying about my future). No roommates. No rent. No grocery shopping. No paying for laundry. Lots of not having to do things actually. However, I do miss getting to do things. Sleeping in is great and all, but now that I'm passed caring about that, I need things to keep me busy. Projects are always good, but I refuse to spend my money until I have a paycheck to put money back in my bank account. Speaking of bank accounts, I was really excited to go to the bank and ask them to change my account from college checking to a regular checking (now that I'm not a college student and all). No such luck. Apparently it got changed because Wells Fargo got rid of college checking accounts. Then they brought them back! I walk into the bank thinking I'm cool because I don't need a college checking account and they tell me I should change it back to college checking. Great. I'm going to forever be seen as a college student because my bank account says so. On the plus side, college checking is free. I guess you can say the guy at the bank gave me a graduation gift for the next four years. Welcome to the real world Shannon.

What else cool happens in my life? Oh. I got my first skirt suit for Christmas. I'll admit, I do look pretty professional in it. Now I just need somewhere professional to wear it. I did apply for a job though. Melaleuca in Idaho Falls. No word back yet. Let's keep those fingers crossed for tomorrow shall we? We shall!

School=No Life

I've started what was supposed to be my last semester of college. I only have 14 credits, yet it's the hardest one of my life and it's only the first week! I thought last fall was hard, but that was nothing compared to this. I have two senior English classes, a visual media class, AutoCAD, and a Church History class. Doesn't sound so bad right? Well it is. I have my senior English research project for my writing seminar class, I have to make a class magazine for Rhetorical Studies, I'm learning how to use three programs in Adobe CS5, I have to make a 30-page set of house plans using AutoCAD (that program is almost as bad as trying to learn Mandarin), and then I have to learn all about the History of the Church. On top of all of that, I have work 20 hours a week and my editing job after that. Meanwhile, I have to work out all the kinks so I can graduate next semester and walk at the end of this semester. That means substitution paperwork, email and phone tag, meetings with advisors, fixing degree audit errors (of which there are many). Then, there's grad fair, career fair, and all the other steps to getting my diploma!

Day four of school and I came home from work freaking out. Getting an email saying "your request for substitution has been denied" is not the kind of thing I like to hear. Long story short, I will have no life until after July if I'm lucky. If no one hears from me in the near future, I've probably died of homework and work overload. Call out a search party if this is the case.

Finally!

After spending a good two hours trying to put a new background on this blog, I finally have it looking cute! Thank goodness for Google and all of its answers. I knew Google and I were good friends, but I didn't really know how good until tonight.

I'm really not good at this whole blogging business. Either I just don't have enough going on in my life to write about it, or I have too much going on to have time to write about it. Currently, I'll go with the first answer.

I've been home since Christmas while I'm off-track. This was quite possibly my last chance to come home for any length of time before I graduate and move on to "real life". I'm graduating this year, so I decided to come home and spend time with my family even though I had a great job in Rexburg. I have the rest of my life to earn money, but who knows when I'll get the time with my family again. So here I am, with no job and a lot of free time on my hands.

A lot has changed since my last post. I got the job I'd interviewed for and I love it! I can't wait to go back to it in the spring. All of last semester is a bit of a blur because I only ever remember going to class, work, coming home to do homework, getting a little sleep, and doing it all again the next day. My idea of "fun" was watching a movie with my roommates and falling asleep on the couch ten minutes into it. Not very fun, now that I think about it. Fall semester was a ton of work, academically, physically, and spiritually. I had some tough classes. I had ones that weren't so tough, but required a lot of work. I worked 20 hours a week. Taught Relief Society once a month. I went to dentist appointments once every two weeks--those could be anywhere from two to four hours, including travel time. In between all of that was the mountain of homework that never seemed to get smaller and the growing lack of sleep that followed.

At one point I thought I was going to have a mental breakdown, so I drove home with a girl in my ward for the weekend and surprised my family with a visit. There happened to be a boy at home that I was interested in for the first part of the semester. Things didn't work out and that made my life a little easier because I didn't have to worry about him anymore. I finally finished my dentist appointments just before Thanksgiving break and can say that I'm 100% cavity free! One week before finals and moving home, my horrible toothache came back and would not go away. After one long, sleepless night, I got in to see the dentist and have the dreaded root canal that we thought had been prevented on my first visit. I had to skip all of my classes that day, tell my boss that I couldn't come into work, and reschedule a group presentation for my architecture class.

Bring it!

Fall semester starts on Thursday and I'm finally getting excited about it. I have 33 credits left until I'll have my Bachelors Degree. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel finally! I'd like to say many new things have happened in my life since April, but it's just not so. Mark got married on July 31st to Hayley Albaugh. They were married in the Idaho Falls Idaho LDS temple. Hayley is the other big sister I never had. After the wedding I went back home for the summer break. It was really nice to be home for a while and sleep in my own bed again. I'd planned to stay until the beginning of September, but ended up flying out early for a job interview in Rexburg. Since I was coming up early anyway my aunt decided to get me in to see her dentist. She's giving me tons of editing to do so that I can pay the bill and I'm so grateful for it. I get to do something I love doing and do it with no more tooth pain! I haven't heard back from the job at school and I was supposed to hear back by the end of this week. It's an Online Course Copy Editor position with the Curriculum Development department. This job would be perfect for me! Anyway, I have the feeling some good things are coming my way along with some hard things. Whatever it is, I'm ready.

New in 2010

Okay, so it's been a long time since my last post. I'd say I was really busy, but that isn't really true. I guess you could say I've been in a bit of a rut the last few months, doing the same thing day after day--wake-up, work, chill time, and go to bed. Sounds exciting huh? Well I have accomplished a few things during my semester off-track. I've read 10 novels since January. The first was a lovely little book, called Gilead, that I never finished last semester for my Themes class. The second was A Single Voice written by Kristen M. Oaks, about life as a single member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was amazing! I marked it up like a textbook should be. I'm going to need to read it again though--there's a lot to take in. The next five were of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. They pretty great. My roommate and I read two, three, and four out loud to each other instead of fighting over who got to read them first. We thought it was a fair compromise and good practice for her, being an English Ed major and all. I then found a new series at Barnes and Noble (the ultimate weakness for anyone who appreciates words, reading, adventure, or trip away from the real world) called The Luxe series. I've now read books one and two, The Luxe and Rumors. It's an amazing version of Gossip Girl, 1899 style! I'm in love with them! That takes up the book eight and nine spots. Book 10 is called Nobody's Princess. It's about Helen of Sparta--the "what happened before all of that?" story. It's mostly fiction because no one knows exactly what happened in her life before she was Helen of Troy.
An even more amazing accomplishment....I got my hair to curl for the first time without the assistance of leave-in curlers, curly shampoo/conditioner, egg whites, or any of that other fancy stuff that does nothing in my hair. The magic tool? A straightener. I know right? "Isn't that an oxymoron?" The answer is no!
I finished my application to BYU Provo and sent it in. It's a good thing I decided that I didn't want to go before I found out if I got in or not. Turns out that I didn't get accepted, and I'm quite happy with that.
Mark came home from his mission in the Minnesota Minneapolis Hmong mission on March 17th. I went home for six days with my Aunt Annalee, Grandpa Atkinson, my cousin Leslie's second oldest Jacelyn, and Lindsay. It was great to be home for some California sun while Rexburg was still coming out of the ice age. Even better, was being with all of my immediate family! It's been a long time since we've had all 5 kids in the same house for more than a few days. It's also great that Mark came home completely normal. Most might think that's weird for a returned missionary, but I didn't expect anything but our typical Mark. He got accepted to school here at BYU-Idaho. I think he's starting this coming semester, which is in less than three weeks. He's on the Winter/Spring track and they told him to start in January. He wanted to try for Fall semester as well, but I guess they wouldn't allow that because the RM program didn't apply to his situation.
Updates in my love life....about the same as they always are. I sort of started seeing a guy at the beginning of the semester, but that didn't last long. Doesn't surprise you right? I guess you could say I weed them out pretty fast! That just means that when I do find a guy that's worth it, he'll be an amazing catch because I know which ones are the losers. I still have to see him at work pretty frequently, which can be a little awkward sometimes. I try to be myself and not let it get to me, which is really easy when I have nothing to say to him. I had my first real date of the semester last night. A friend from home, Shaun, took me to the REX for i-Night. We played two games of bowling and saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It was really fun. The movie was hilarious and I would recommend it to everyone who needs a good laugh and an escape from the adult world.
One last thing, I am now an official Guide for ChaCha.com. It's pretty chill. All I have to do is answer people's questions that they send in through text or calling. The pay isn't amazing, but it's better than nothing and far better than the plasma center. I figure that it's a great way to get some extra cash and much easier than getting a needle stuck in your arm twice a week. I can work as much or as little as I want and the money gets deposited directly into my bank account. I already have my job at the opinion center, so I have a pretty steady income and anything on top of that is great! Anyone who has some time to kill each week and wouldn't mind making a few dollars doing it should try becoming a guide.

Amusement

Here's another amusing site. It's got some pretty great videos and funny stories. I would highly recommend this site to most people! Great for a good laugh.

I Must Be Mormon!

A couple of my roommates are fans of the website fmylife; they recently discovered a more appropriate one meant for mormons called I Must Be Mormon. It's a pretty funny website and good for a laugh when you've got nothing better to do. This is the kind of entertainment poor college students have to rely on, but we love it!
